His beauty soothes my soul

Last night my 15-year-old asked me to look out the window at the sun shining through the rain that was falling.  It was light enough to capture the sunset in our backyard. It looked like glowing streamers from heaven. I could only capture the sound on the video below! Some things are too beautiful to capture on a camera!

Early this morning, God provided such beauty in the sunrise………………………….

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

2 Corinthians 3:17

Today in worship we heard a beautiful testimony from a man who struggled with addiction, suicidal tendencies, and childhood trauma.  He found freedom in Christ and was baptized today.  He wept.  He went into the waters and came out rejoicing.  What a privilege to rejoice with him.

We sang the most powerful song….

You came to set the captives free
You came to bring us liberty
My sin and my rejection met
Your blood and my acceptance
Now I’m alive to bring You praise

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
Every chain is broken through You, Jesus
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom

When I sang this beautiful worship song, I thought of this man’s chains being lifted and his freedom.  I also thought of those who are literally chained–those in slavery, concentration camps, prisons…..  Testimonies of God’s amazing love moving people to dance and sing despite their circumstances bring us a deeper understanding of the power of God’s love. Through Voice of the Martyrs, I often hear testimonies of those imprisoned for their faith, but they continue to worship Jesus.  Through chains and oppression they worship.

Imagine being in chains or oppressed yet you choose to sing……receive His love…….

Another testimony was from a woman and her husband had recently left her.  She was angry until she realized that the love of God could fill her and remove the disappointment and feelings of rejection.  I was deeply moved in the house of the Lord today.

It seemed things that I was allowing to bind me were released, and I could dance and sing!  I’m FREE!  I’m an imperfect person who is FREE by God’s grace.

The rest of the song:

I’m free I’m free, I’m free to dance and sing
I’m free, I’m free, I’m free to shout it out
I’m free, I’m free, I’m free to dance and sing
I’m free, I’m free, I’m free to worship You I’m gonna worship you

Are you a Dixie cup?

Imagine your soul has the potential to choose the capacity of a Dixie cup or a Cistern, or better yet–THE GRAND CANYON! When you wake up and face the day do you open your heart to receive the amazing love of God by offering a Dixie Cup? This visual inspired me. I may feel that I have nothing to give but what about allowing God to fill me? Out of your emptiness, do you come to him feeling unworthy of being filled with His wondrous love? This may or may not be tied to self-esteem. It could be a lack of knowledge or a lack of strength.006

You are worthy to receive His love in large portions and to be filled without the expectation of immediately pouring out. It’s true that love = action, but for just a moment think about how much God wants to pour His love into you through actions like a flower blooming, breath in your lungs, a bird singing, your favorite song, the smell of roses, a loving touch from someone, and in the silence of meditating on Him. He will speak to you His love and fill you up!

You are worthy of being filled beyond the visual capacity of the size of your body–think…..

Grand Canyon! The universe!

A short video:

Warts and All…

Genesis 2:25

The man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

God originally created a man and woman to become one flesh, totally open to each other physically, spiritually, and emotionally. In this perfect union no sin existed.

Once sin came into the world, the enemy has perverted and twisted all things that God created to be holy and perfect.  It’s sometimes so obvious and other times very subtle.

Obviously pornography and sexual abuse are perversions.  Subtle things like aging and comparing yourself can wreak havoc on your mind and self-worth.  Like most folks, I get a ton of mail advertising clothing, perfume, vacations, and credit cards.  Recently, I noted a beautiful couple advertising perfume, and I laughed right out loud to my family.  I turned the picture of this couple around and asked, “Do any of you walk down the street, or work with, or go to school with anyone who looks like this? ”   The stark reality of how ridiculous the marketing folks had altered and staged this couple was evident.

Yesterday I shared with Parish some of my obvious aging in humility.  He graciously and sweetly looked deep in my eyes with tears and shared that our love was a love that is complete “one-flesh” intimacy no matter if “warts and all” existed.  Bottom line–it doesn’t matter if we don’t look like that unrealistic couple or find ourselves aging, our intimacy comes from a love that Jesus has developed through many years of oneness.

It’s not just about being naked, but being with someone you can be totally transparent without judgment, ridicule, or abandonment.  To engage in the hard talks, to love when someone else is “unlovely” in the moment or for a season, in sickness and in health, “warts and all”.

Happy Father’s Day to my beautiful heavenly father who loves me perfectly and completely.  Happy Father’s Day to my husband who strives to love me like this–the striving is what keeps us “one flesh”.

I love you Jesus–Abba, Father.

I love you Parish…….

Okay, so, just to share something funny……

Pray for Power and Strength to know His Love for You

And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.

Ephesians 3:18

Some versions say “strength”.  And may you have the strength to understand God’s love for you.

I love Jesus.  I know this verse.  The trouble this side of heaven is truly grasping God’s love for me.  After a series of events, the word “power” and “strength” became neon signs within the verse.  I can’t understand this on my own.  No amount of anything I try as a human will create this life changing love within my soul.

I’m not talking about salvation.  I’m asking us to look deep, deep, deep into the crevice of our soul that we share with no one.  It’s your spot that only Jesus knows and perhaps you can’t even describe it or talk about it, but Jesus knows it.  He has been trying to get to that spot for years because He knows that if you acknowledge and work towards healing and bring this crevice into the vast open spaces, you will finally be set free from its bondage.

Awful nights.

The ones you are wide awake talking to God while the house is sleeping.  You are crying out to God and wonder  “How did I get here?”  The nights that seem hopeless, and you wrestle with the enemy trying hard to convince you that you are not worthy, nor will you ever be enough–you are less than.

Waking up, I share my heart with my husband.  He began to share, unknowingly, about my verse that inspired me.  He shared his “spot” and said, “Anna, sometimes, you truly just have to go on faith in God’s Word–trust His Word.” I know that’s simple but the timing was perfect.  It’s like the time a small child comes up to you with a simple word or sentence that changes your perspective, and you ask, “How did that kid know I needed that?”GatheringGroundsMinistryVCU 017

When times are good and we are busy, we don’t know the depths of this despair, but as humans we all face those nights in which we question God’s love for us.  When that night comes pray for power and strength to understand His love and be still.  Joy comes in the morning.  Wrestle, pray, and have faith in God’s Word.  He loves you.
