I walked in the cool of the morning, listening to a redemption story. A 16-year-old on a white water rafting trip that took a turn for the worse. As she looked up from underneath the water, she was at peace–okay with where she was going. Yet, a hand reached into the water, pulling her up and into the boat. This rescue was a life-long analogy to her life. That God would rescue us over and over again to redeem and ensure His purpose for our lives. (Hearing Jesus podcast with Rachael Groll, Episode 8)
The episode sparked a profound conversation about how its message applies to everyday life. It reminded us that regardless of our choices or the events unfolding, God never abandons us. He is always present and willing to extend a helping hand, even amid our mess. As I strolled down the path, I reflected on the speaker’s words about surrender. With arms outstretched and my heart lifted towards the heavens, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. This is what it means to truly surrender to God. However, lately, I’ve found myself curled up in a ball, withdrawing and shrinking back. This is not surrendering at all. So, what causes me to react this way, God? Is it fear? Worry? Exhaustion? Or maybe, a lack of trust? Although a good night’s rest, curled up in a comfy bed, can help us recharge and regroup, we must be mindful not to remain in a daily posture that is closed off to possibilities and the help of others. If God were to reach out to you right now, would you have the courage to take His hand?
This reminded me of a prayer sent to me as I start a new study this Fall. The prayer encouraged us to say “yes” and to take risks. “Oh, bother, I thought.” I need to say “no” more often and not add something to the list. I headed to worship that night, and God worked the message back into my heart and mind during prayer time. “What I need for you to say “yes” to is a rescue–healing. “Yes, Lord, Yes!” I repeated this yes over and over to the rhythm of the drums behind me. This message coincided with a sermon, “Keep Going Back Out Of Your Mouth,” Numbers 14:1-4, from my friend Charlome. You will always have a testimony of healing and change. It feels frustrating sometimes to ask for something that looks different at my age but has similar patterns. Believe! Spread your arms open with your heart towards heaven in surrender.
My walk included a hawk flying with her wings open and soaring. One of her feathers escaped as she flew by and it spiraled downward in the wind. Nature’s confirmation and beauty. Thank you.
