A Well that Never Runs Dry

How many times have I heard the story of Jesus leaving the 99 to visit the woman at the well? She went to the well during the noonday sun; she could not, would not go in the cool of the morning with the women who seemed to have their life together. This well has been a part of my current book, podcast, random conversations, music, and daily activities. What is it about this well that you are trying to say to me? Speak to my heart, Lord. Something fresh and new.

This well and the personal moment was a divine appointment. Why didn’t Jesus visit her home when one of her husbands walked out on her? Why the well?

Of course, He speaks to her about living water in which she will never thirst again. Can you imagine “to never thirst again” spiritually? No matter what season or what happens to you and those you love, you will have this deep knowledge and trust that God is right there. He never leaves us nor forsakes us.

This well that never runs dry. This well that I can draw from each day, and, sometimes, moment by moment. Jesus did not meet her at church or a retreat. He showed up in her daily tasks at just the right moment. Maybe her heart was open to hear this good news. We know that she left filled and spilled His love everywhere. She ran to the places she felt she could not show up in. She infiltrated them with the living water from the well. And I love that she says, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:29)

It’s incredible to think that Jesus didn’t just meet people in traditional places. He showed up in their daily lives when they needed Him the most. When His love was shared, people felt fulfilled and empowered to spread that same love to others, even in unlikely places. It’s truly inspiring to see how one encounter with Jesus can change a person’s life and how they are compelled to invite others to experience the same life-changing love.

All those jumbled-up thoughts, Jesus spoke right into them. I see you, and I love you. She poses a question that I believe our soul wrestles with. Could this be…

And repeatedly, Jesus meets us at the well to confirm His love and provision. He reminds us that He is the great “I Am.” Are you depressed? Jesus says, “I Am your comforter.” Are you afraid? Jesus says, “I Am your defender and protector.” Are you confused? Jesus says, I Am your peace.”

I’ve enjoyed singing this beautiful Selah song, “There is a Fountain.” It is an old hymn performed by a fantastic group that I still enjoy listening to today. Below, I’m singing for my children and grandchildren. I love you, precious. Long after I’m gone, I pray you drink from His well.
