In the profound finale of Malachi in the Old Testament, we find an echo that reverberates through centuries—the promise of healing and hope embedded in God’s words. Chapter 4 speaks to a time of waiting, 400 years of silence from God, yet it leaves us with a powerful image: the healing in His wings. This imagery defines the wings of a prayer shawl, adorned with tassels, symbolizing the divine presence and protection that God offers.
Fast forward to the time of Jesus, and we see this prophecy come to life. Jesus walked the earth, known not just for His teachings but for His miraculous healing powers. One poignant story stands out—the account of a woman who suffered in isolation for 12 long years. Her affliction rendered her unclean in the eyes of society, yet her longing for healing drove her to the throng of people surrounding Jesus. Desperate yet brave, she reached out to touch the edge, or “wing,” of His cloak—a symbolic act of faith that transcended her physical ailment. In Matthew 9, we witness a beautiful moment where she is not only healed but also affirmed by Jesus, who says, “Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you.” This tender exchange emphasizes both physical and emotional healing. It prompts reflection: what areas of our lives require such bravery?
Kristi McLelland’s thought-provoking study from Jesus and Women challenges us to examine our own lives—what barriers do we face that make reaching for God feel impossible? While the woman’s struggle was visible, many of us carry hidden wounds that lead to isolation. These inner battles can create feelings of being different or alone, but God invites us to step forward, regardless of our circumstances. As I closed my eyes and imagined that courageous woman stretching out her hand, I felt her desperation blended with hope. She was unclean, she was a woman in a rigid society, yet she reached for a Rabbi—her bravery is a reminder that we, too, can be bold in our pursuit of healing.
Today, I encourage you to reflect on what might bring isolation into your life. What struggles weigh heavy on your heart? Understand that God desires to meet you in that space of vulnerability. He extends His wings wide, inviting you to reach out and touch His healing presence.
In our quest for healing, we are reminded that we are deserving of love and restoration. Just like that woman, we can find courage in our vulnerability. So, let us take heart and trust in the powerful truth that healing flows from Him. Reach for His wings; you are not alone. Your story of bravery and faith can inspire others to do the same. Let’s take that leap together, knowing that divine healing awaits.
Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me. Psalm 63: 7-8
