Just before we left on vacation, Valentina and I discussed family dynamics. It doesn’t matter if you claim to be the Cleaver family from the 50s; we all have individuals in families that bring their current state of mind, personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. With my background in social work, my children have grown up with sentence stems and how to have tough conversations. We try to communicate well. At least, that was a goal we would strive for with lots of practice.
Amid the question, “What do you need from me to make this vacation safe and fun?” Valentina exclaimed, “Mom, look!” Right outside the window was a huge groundhog playing in our tree. At first, we could not make out what it was. We said everything from a Koala bear (to be funny) to a beaver. With a smile on his face, this playful animal showed up when we both shared the importance of eliminating high expectations and letting things happen as they will. Have fun. And recognize the privilege of vacation and God’s beauty as a gift. Drake knew right away it was a groundhog. Thanks, Drake!
God does have a sense of humor. We’ve been in our home for almost 20 years, and I’ve never seen a groundhog in my tree smiling at me.

This morning, on the screen porch, I continue my communion with God, and I notice a powerful message within my meditation that brings me peace, beauty, and the birds singing. He is with us.

My yoga practice yesterday was a time to set my intentions on love. Love for God, self, and others. I closed my eyes to see God’s love outstretched, touching my family and friends and surrounding me with His light.
- 2 Corinthians 12:9—”My grace is all you need, for my power is the greatest when you are weak.”
- Psalm 73:26—”My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
- Nehemiah 8:10—”Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
- Psalm 46:5—”God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”
- Philippians 4:13—”I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
My Bible app “Pray as you Go” encouraged us to declare our love for God. The song “How Great Thou Art” came to my mind. The whispers of a song early in the morning.
