Exploring the Art and History of Musée de l’Orangerie

A new day! It’s Saturday, April 5. Since it’s the weekend, there seems to be more traffic in Paris, and we are running a bit late for our reserved time. We used our museum pass; however, this museum requires a reservation. We have about a 15-minute buffer, but there’s no quick way for our Uber to drop us off, so we had to run to the entrance. Thankfully, we made it with just one minute to spare!

We adored this museum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The history is fascinating, and the layout is simple and inviting.

Quick Facts

Located in the Tuileries Garden in Paris, near Place de la Concorde.

Originally built in 1852 by Napoleon III to store orange trees during winter.

Famous for housing Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, displayed in two oval rooms.

Features works by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and more.

The building was designed with a glass south side for light and a windowless north side for insulation.

Became an art museum after World War I, dedicated to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.

We decided to rent the audio guide. Remember to bring headphones or earbuds! The items were well organized, and the information added to our visit. We started on the bottom level and then worked our way up. The cafe was a great midway point to rest and have brunch. The cafe is right beside the gift shop with many lovely things to buy that represent the art you’ve interacted with during your visit. Keep in mind, the museum is closed on Tuesdays.

The Family Area at Musée de l’Orangerie is accessible year-round during museum opening hours. For children aged 0-12 and accompanying adults, the Family Area offers a chance to take a break and enjoy a sensory-based and creative experience of the artworks in the Musée de l’Orangerie collection. Designed to introduce our youngest visitors to art and critical observation, this free-access area offers a unique approach through a variety of activity centers focused on experimentation, touch, and play, providing an educational and entertaining experience for all visitors.

Their website has amazing resources, including podcasts and videos!
