Chippokes State Park: History, Nature, and Fun

This state park truly rose to the “most favorite” for its beauty and bike trails. We visited Chippokes State Park a few years ago during the holiday season. They provided a wreath-making session, and we fell in love with the park. Upon return, we did not realize the depth of what it had to offer.

We parked at the visitor center, where they provided refreshments, restrooms, and the typical gift shop at a state park. Near this area was a shelter for families to gather, and the south side of the James River to enjoy the beach area and water activities.

We took the scenic path to the trail, but they also have a paved road. The scenic path smelled of honeysuckle, and the flowers and butterflies were radiant!

When you arrive, you can stop in the visitor’s center and obtain a trail guide, or use the website for planning. They have camping sites, unique old homes for cabin rentals, yurts, and glamping!

The water, butterflies, and miles of green pastures filled our senses. We saw a family of deer, wildlife, a working farm with cows, and, again, the butterflies were plentiful. There is so much history to this place.

Chippokes is one of the oldest continually farmed plantations in the country. A working farm since 1619, the park offers modern recreational activities and a glimpse of life in a bygone era. Visitors tour the historic area with its antebellum mansion and outbuildings, stroll through formal gardens, and view antique equipment at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum

We were able to ride for 10 miles on our bikes. We enjoyed a few trails, and one particular one that takes you down to the lower section of Chippokes provides canoe rentals and a launching area. That is where we saw a precious family of deer.

From Chippokes, we drove 4 miles to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry and took the ferry over to Jamestown. We went into Williamsburg and had dinner at the Blue Talon Bistro. Delicious food, and make sure you make reservations.
