Courage requires fear.  Feeling fearful?  Chances are courage is your next step.  In Michael Hyatt’s post today he shares the benefits of fear: http://michaelhyatt.com/why-courage-requires-fear.html#more-19739

Humans have two instinctive responses to fear – fight or flight.  Dr. Townsend, a Christian psychologist, has written a book on boundaries. He shares another Godly response to fighting or fleeing.064

Proverbs 19:11  “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”

Fear is rooted in wronged relationships.  We may be angry, indifferent, frustrated, but the root is fear.  In wisdom and glory we overlook offenses; however, Dr. Townsend made it clear that it is not wise or glorious to overlook patterns of hurtful behaviors.  Those behaviors require action and boundaries. You can’t run, but you can set a boundary.  You can’t fight because fighting causes more pain.  How do we trust again?  I highly recommend the book Beyond Boundaries by Dr. Townsend.

1. Ask the person, “How has my offense or pattern of behaviors impacted you?”  And, REALLY LISTEN.

2. Seek help.  Don’t fall into the trap of “I can do this all by myself.”

3.  Be in a body of believers that are encouraging you and offering truth.

Setting boundaries.  No is a complete sentence.  Expressing your needs is okay.  Acknowledging the pattern…

Courage Cannot Be Separated From Action

To illustrate this point further, let me share some information I heard from the “Men of Honor” simulcast put on by Sherwood Baptist Church, makers of the movie Courageous. Ed Litton, pastor of a sister church, spoke at the event and he hit the nail on the head:

  • We were made to be courageous.
  • In trials, our first response is to run.
  • We were made for trouble.
  • Stand for what matters.
  • Courage cannot be separated from action.

I used to worry about my fear, yet I’ve noticed patterns of glorious courageous behavior directed from GOD!  “Fear not! I am with you!  Even unto the ends of the earth!”  HE IS MAKING ME COURAGEOUS!  Bring on the fear!  Look fear in the eye and know God is with you!  Fear not!
