Pastor Stan from Cloverhill Assembly of God shared a message on gratitude. Some points stood out to me.
An ungrateful heart begins the path of rebelliousness.
The root of complaining is sometimes entitlement. You owe me attitude.
He then shared that Jonah (who was a great complainer) ended up in the belly of a whale! It was not until he began to praise God within the reality of his situation that the whale spit him out onto dry land.
Jonah 2:9 But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the LORD alone.
I have a choice today. I can be in the belly of a whale of murmuring, or I can praise God for where I am, the circumstance I’m in, and rejoice in my blessings, not lament my lack. Just like Jonah who was delivered from the belly AFTER he gave thanks, we can be delivered to praise HIM in the reality of our situation. He is not asking us to ignore, be in denial, or fake a happy tune….He desires us to be thankful for Him and trust that He will provide a way.
Some stats to get us thinking…
If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of the world.
If you have money in the bank, your wallet, and some spare change you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness you are more blessed than the million people who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the agony of imprisonment or torture, or the horrible pangs of starvation you are luckier than 500 million people alive and suffering.
If you can read this message you are more fortunate than 3 billion people in the world who cannot read it at all.
I read a great message from Tracie Miles from Proverbs 31 Ministry – If your mind is on negative over load – GET BOSSY WITH YOUR MIND WITH GOD’S TRUTH! It was the bossy part she said that made me smile. I thought about me bossing my negative thoughts with God’s truth! Funny! And, effective! Thank you Tracie!
