Love Keeps No Record of Wrongs

God’s word says that “love keeps no records of wrongs”.

“An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city, and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.” Proverbs 18:19

God understands the power of harbored pain in our minds.  I’ve always struggled with the amazing gift or power of the brain to remember and store information and memories; yet,  we are to keep no record of wrongs.  Where is the balance for safety, sanity, and wholeness?

After the message on Sunday, our family digested this at the lunch table over salad.  We talked about Joseph and his brothers who sold him into slavery to rid themselves of “father’s favorite”.  They hated him.  Years later through circumstances only God could create, they were reunited.  Joseph physically, emotionally, and spiritually saw his brothers repented and asking for forgiveness.  We decided that forgiveness is easier when it’s reciprocal and filled with change and remorse.

What do you do when reconciliation is impossible?  Do you anguish for years hoping and feeling guilty?

“It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” 2 Samuel 22:33

Recognizing the power of our brains to remember, we ask God to arm us with strength and make our way perfect.  Embrace the memory and walk in it with God.  Wrestle with Him.  Talk to Him.

Perfect is impossible this side of heaven.  Perfect = God’s faithfulness to be there and guide us.  Give God the key to your fortified city, your shackled heart barred with wires and layers of walls.  He is trustworthy.  Never give the key to someone who will continue to hurt and abuse.  Your unshackled life is not a doormat, it’s freedom IN CHRIST to be all He has called you to be.  God will show us the difference between healthy, struggling relationships and those He wants you to walk away from for your protection.  We are not the Holy Spirit in those situations–we give all control and power to God.  We think we give Him control!  He already is IN control–not us! He just wants us to let go and concentrate on HIM and HIS love and plan for us.

God is jealous for you and will fight for you.  His Word is filled with protection.

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32:7

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. Psalm 18:30

A prayer:

I pray your mind will rest on His love today.  I pray any places you’ve locked up, you will give to Him and embrace the journey with the knowledge that He has done and will do great things in your life!

An activity:

If you have a running record in your mind, embrace it!  Sit down and write the record out in privacy.  Talk to a trusted Christian friend or counselor.  Part of the bondage of our past is holding it in and not processing it.  Once you bring it out to the light you are able to see it, digest it, and work on it with Jesus.  Some people have found it helpful to take index cards and write on each card something you are struggling with– a record.  Once you’ve processed them, shred them or burn them as a symbolic gesture of they have no power over you!  Your brain may remember, but you have added the memory of giving it to God who is fighting for you.  Remember perfect = God’s faithfulness and guidance.  Perfect is not “I have to forget and BE perfect!”
