Several years ago, Victoria and I sang a duet by Selah called “There is a Fountain”. There is a few lines in this old hymn that gets me every time.
The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in His day;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.
The original author of this old hymn is William Cowper who struggled a lifetime with feelings of unworthiness and depression, but found redemption through Jesus, and encouragement from one of his best friends, John Newton, who was redeemed from his life of slave trade to pastor and wrote the old hymn, “Amazing Grace”. These two friends worked in ministry together and wrote hymns together.
A partnership based on the love of Jesus.
It was during that time in which we sang the duet at church that God spoke to my heart about the dying thief. I imagined seeing him in heaven one day and asking him, “What was it like to die next to Jesus and find total grace and forgiveness literally at the cross with Jesus?” My soul sees the eyes of Jesus piercing through all the barriers, bitterness, and hate of this thief, as he accepts this amazing love.
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
My father is an excellent writer and loves Jesus. I imagined him writing a historical fiction surrounding this man’s life. What led him to a life of thievery, and how was it that he ended up hanging on a cross next to Jesus? After many years of hard work, my father took a daughter’s request and wrote a story that will move you to tears and a renewed passion for the love of Jesus.
On a personal note, the work of my father’s soul work and hands move me to tears.
He made my personal soul request a reality and, for that, I’m eternally grateful. This book and the message will ring throughout the generations from a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather that redemption is found in Jesus, and His love is truly amazing.
